What is the control group in a science experiment?

I'm having trouble with my home work and i don't remember what the control group is.|||The control is the normal group, to compare to the experimental group. Say you wanted to test how carrots grow with salted water. The experimental group would be the one with salted water, and the control would be the one with normal water.
